For Kyla Thomson, bravery took on a profound meaning through the journey of her daughter, Bella. Bella who became known as Bella Brave for her brave attitude and messages on social media, was a TikTok star who captured the hearts of millions while facing over 30 surgeries for her rare health conditions. Despite her challenges, Bella radiated joy, courage, and wisdom beyond her years.

After Bella’s passing in 2024, Kyla’s life changed as it does for all grieving parents. But instead of retreating into grief, she chose to honour her daughter’s legacy through advocacy, storytelling, and her own healing journey. Kyla’s story, shared on The Angel Moms Podcast, offers powerful lessons on resilience, hope, and the enduring strength of love. Here are some of the key insights from our conversation that can help anyone navigating the challenges of grief and loss.

1. Lean into Vulnerability to Inspire Others

Sharing Bella’s story with millions of people meant Kyla had to open herself up to vulnerability and judgment. But it also created an incredible ripple effect of connection and inspiration. By being honest about the struggles and joys of Bella’s journey, Kyla allows others to feel seen, supported, and hopeful.

Vulnerability isn’t a weakness; it’s a powerful tool for creating meaningful relationships and making an impact. Whether you’re sharing your story with a loved one or a larger audience, being authentic can help others—and yourself—heal.

2. Balance Hope with Harsh Realities

Parenting a child with rare health conditions required Kyla to walk a fine line between hope and acceptance. She had to believe in the possibility of good outcomes while also preparing for difficult realities. This balance allowed her to stay present in the moment and give Bella the best life possible, no matter how long or short it would be.

This lesson applies universally. Balancing hope and reality helps us navigate uncertainty with grace. Focus on what you can control, and find small joys even in tough circumstances.

3. Helping Others Can Help You Heal

In the aftermath of Bella’s passing, Kyla leaned into advocacy and helping others as a way to process her grief. On her Instagram profile, she shares her belief that “helping others can help you heal.” By channeling her pain into purpose, Kyla has found a way to honour Bella’s legacy while supporting other families facing similar challenges.

If you’re navigating grief or child loss, consider ways you can extend support to others. This kind of 'heart work' aids in your own healing too.

4. Lean on Comforts—Big and Small

In one of her many videos, Bella tells viewers to be "brave and bring a stuffie, because you're never too old for that!". Her wise words are a reminder that small comforts can make a big difference. Whether it’s a favourite item, a calming ritual, or a moment of laughter, these small acts can provide solace in life’s most challenging moments.

Identify something that brings you comfort and keep it close. It might be a meaningful photo, a favourite book, or even a mindfulness practice that helps you stay grounded.

5. Grief and Joy Can Coexist

Perhaps the most powerful lesson Kyla has learned is that grief and joy can exist together. While losing Bella brought unimaginable pain, her legacy—and the memories they created together—continue to bring Kyla joy. This duality is a reminder that it’s possible to honour your grief while still embracing moments of happiness.

If you’re grieving, give yourself permission to feel joy without guilt. It doesn’t mean you’re forgetting; it means you’re celebrating their memory.
